Scottish & Newcastle wants to brew Baltika, Russia's biggest beer brand, under licence in the UK.
It is holding talks with Carlsberg, its joint-venture partner in Russian brewer BBH.
S&N already imports a small amount to sell in a few select bars, including JD Wetherspoon.
But it believes Baltika could be as successful as San Miguel, which it already brews under licence.
BBH released a trading statement last week showing group volumes up 16% in July and August.
Experts predict Baltika, which already claims a 24.1% share of the Russian beer market, will overtake Heineken within a few years as Europe's largest brand.
