The SABMiller UK-based brewer plans to begin production of its Pilsner Urquell, its leading international brand, in Russia. Russian press reports stated the company had finished mounting equipment for its new $2m (£1.3m) production lines at its brewery in Kaluga. SABMiller confirmed it would be brewing Urquell at the Russian site, but did not give a timescale for the start of operations. SABMiller currently brews Urquell at its original home in Pilsen in the Czech Republic and exports it from there. The move is likely to prove controversial, with beer aficionados angry that a classic beer, the original pale lager, is being replicated away from the place it was first made.
