Sunderland’s Double Maxim Beer Company has won the Tesco Best Beer Award for Winter 2005 in the small brewer category with its Maximus ale. The beer, which is 6.5%abv, is brewed especially for winter conditions, claims the brewery. The Double Maxim brewery is owned by Doug Trotman and Mark Anderson, and was set up six years ago from the ashes of Sunderland’s Vaux brewery, which closed in 1999. The pair established the brewery specifically to save Vaux’s Double Maxim ale, which it managed successfully, resurrecting Vaux’s Samson and Ward’s Best Bitter brands along the way. Maximus, the strongest beer in the brewery’s portfolio, will now be available at over 250 Tesco outlets across the UK. Double Maxim co-owner Doug Trotman said: "We are proud to win this prestigious national award and hope the consumers like it as much as the judges.
