More relaxed Sunday licensing laws came into effect last week, accompanied by extra proposals for a looser regime on new year's eve and other celebrations.

The Deregulation (Sunday Licensing) Order 2001 allows licensed premises to apply for a Sunday extension until 12.30am on Monday morning or 2am (3am in London) when the Monday is a Bank Holiday.

The Home Office is also proposing extending drinking hours this new year's eve and the Queen's Golden Jubilee next year. The relaxation would be a pilot for possible future changes for special celebrations.

The Home Office is keen to introduce flexibility using existing legislation while current laws are still in place.
