Wine expert Hugh Johnson has criticised the fashion for ever-greater alcohol content, branding the super-strength bottles as "boring". The trend started with Australian and other New World producers, but now European vineyards are creating similar products with a punch of 14.5 or 15 degrees. Johnson, whose 30th anniversary edition of the Pocket Wine Book is published later this month, claims the excess alcohol "muddies" the flavour and blurs the aromas. The Sunday Times 10/09/06 page 9
