The European Union has bowed to lobbying from Polish vodka producers and proposed that the description "vodka" should only be legal when the spirit is distilled from grain or potatoes. The British Government had opposed the move on the grounds that vodka here is mostly made from sugar beet or molasses. Brussels wants Smirnoff and other distillers to label their product "white spirit", which sounds like the stuff used to clean paintbrushes. The Sunday Telegraph 21/05/06 page 2
