The European Commission has backed down from its attempt to scrap the standard 700ml whisky bottle.   The European Parliament has now formally approved the decision to retail the nine standard bottle sizes after a campaign by the Scotch Whisky Association.   Under the EU proposals, shops could have been inundated with scores of different bottle sizes.  The Association claimed that both consumers and distillers preferred the standard sizes which helped purchasing decisions and made high-speed bottling easier.   The Times 12/5/07 page 28
