Diageo has confirmed that it is in talks to buy a stake in India’s United Spirit, the owner of the Whyte & Mackay Scotch Whisky brand, in a move that would increase its presence in the country’s lucrative spirits market. The company, which is led by Paul Walsh, is believed to be oooking tyo acquire a 25% stake in United Spirits, including a 15% stake from Vijay Mallya, who owns the Force India Formula One team and Kingfisher Airlines. United Spirits owns the Whyte & Mackay Scotch Whisky brand, which it bought for £595m in 2007. United Spirits is the largest distiller in India, and sells Indian-made foreign liquors as well as some Scotch whisky brands including Whyte & Mackay, which it acquired in 2007 for £595m.
