Diageo, the drinks giant, has outbid rivals Heineken and SABMiller by agreeing to buy Ethiopia’s state-owned Meta Abo Brewery for $225m. SABMiller bid $190m and Heineken $188 million, according to Bloomberg. The deal has been approved by Ethiopia’s Privatization and Public Enterprise Supervising Agency. Diageo is reported to be planning to make an initial $10m investment at the brewery and expand its capacity of 600,000 hectolitres. The move is seen as a way to expand into emerging markets to mitigate less healthy demand in more established regions.
