Diageo has appointed Virginia Proud as its new UK innovation director. She will be responsible for leading the development of new products. The group has not launched any new lines since 2002, when it released two variants to its Bailey's brand, and the post has been vacant since Nick Robinson was promoted to become Guinness marketing director in March 2003. Proud, who previously worked in a similar role with Diageo Australia, will also work on the development of new concepts as part of the company's international innovations team, which was behind Smirnoff Ice and Archers Aqua. Diageo's new business ventures unit, set up to develop innovations outside of the company's core alcoholic drinks business, closed last summer.
