Drinking a glass of beer each day could help prevent cancer, according to new American research. Scientist Fred Stevens, from Oregon State University, says the micro-nutrient Xanthohumol, found in hops, helps prevent the development of breast, colon, ovarian and prostate cancer cells. It detoxifies carcinogens and also inhibits tumour growth at an early stage. The amount of beer required to produce the beneficial effects is not yet known. The Rayne Institute at St Thomas's Hospital in London has also investigated the health benefits of beer. Professor Jonathon Powell says it is one of the best sources of silicon which increases the formation and strength of bones. The Sunday Telegraph 13/11/05 page 8
