Britain's first Wimpy bar was opened 50 years ago this week and. The menu has remained virtually unchanged ever since. Only the world-famous "bender", after inspiring generations of schoolboy sniggers, has become a rather dull frankfurter again. There are now about 300 Wimpy restaurants in the UK, only about half the number of McDonald's. But food columnist Terry Durack, the Glenfiddich Restaurant Critic of the Year, was unimpressed. After eating at a Wimpy restaurant in Whitechapel, London, he described the food as "cheap but nasty". He said it left a nasty taste in his mouth and turned "my cast-iron stomach into a washing machine of rumbles, gurgles and spins". The Independent on Sunday 15/05/05 page 16
