Analysts are speculating Whitbread could sell its high-street restaurants and its stake in Britvic following its purchase of Premier Lodge from Spirit Group on Friday. The City is looking for Whitbread to use its purchase of Premier Lodge for £505m on Friday as a catalyst to break up the group. Deutsche Bank believes the purchase of Britain’s third-biggest budget hotel chain from Spirit Group makes it more likely Whitbread will sell some, or all, of the pub-restaurants. UBS says the purchase should result in a fundamental shake-up of Whitbread. New chief executive Alan Parker will announce the results of a review in the autumn. He said it was not his plan to make Whitbread a smaller company and the Premier Lodge deal should not be seen as a long-term signpost of the organisation’s strategy. Last week’s acquisition also included 19 restaurants next to the hotels for a further £31.2m. The Sunday Times (Business) 25/07/04 page 11
