The Hix Oyster & Chop House in London EC1 is capable of greatness, according to The Independent’s Terry Durack who awards it 16 marks out of 20. Owner Mark Hix is described as one of London’s most talented and affable chefs. The plain unpretentious room, dominated by a long wooden bar, is a warm and woody space that feels reassuringly like a chop house, says Durack, adding that it makes you proud to be British even if you are not. Jay Rayner, of The Observer, enjoyed eating at The Dogs, Dave Ramsden’s new restaurant in Hanover Street, Edinburgh. He describes the food as big, rustic, hardy stuff; broths and stews, pies and “things piled on plates”. Ramsden, says Durack, has managed bands, worked in clubs on Ibiza and waited on tables. The Dogs, he adds, feels like Ramsden’s grown-up take on the world, his “retreat towards simpler, more robust virtues” – that “puts both it and him on the side of the angels”.
