The Rioja region’s wine authority is planning a campaign this month to encourage customers to take unfinished bottles home. The drive is an attempt to persuade them to buy an extra bottle even if they know they will not finish it in the restaurant. Spain’s wine federation says the amount of wine drunk at restaurants in the first half of 2006 dropped 7%, partly on the back of a drink-drive campaign. However, consumption of low-alcohol beer is climbing. Another blow was dealt to the nation’s restaurants and taverna’s on Friday when a smoking ban came into full force affecting premises of more than 100sq m (1,076 sq ft).
