Prezzo, the Italian restaurant chain, is to open ten to twelve restaurants in 2010 after a “year of consolidation”. The company closed three restaurants and combined two others in Lincoln last year, opening two sites in Port Solent in August and in the new St David's Shopping Centre in Cardiff in November. It currently trades from 138 sites. Prezzo chairman Michael Carlton said: “While I am pleased to report that the first quarter of 2010 has started somewhat encouragingly, there are still likely to be challenges ahead for the UK consumer and therefore businesses in our sector. “Mindful of this, we will continue to focus on the quality of our offering and our value proposition and we will continue to develop our relationship with our loyal customers with innovative and value-added marketing initiatives. “ Supported by particularly strong financing, our estate shall continue to benefit from continued investment and, with expansion back on the agenda, we are confident of delivering a positive outcome for the year ahead.” Turnover in the 52 weeks to ended 27 December was up 6% to £91m (2008: £85.9m). Adjusted pre-tax profit, which strips out the effect of an impairment charge taken on struggling sites up for disposal, increased 12% to £12.9m (2008: £11.5m).
