Pesto, the Italian bar-restaurant concept launched by Neil Gatt, the founder of La Tacsa, will open its fourth site in August in Glasgow. The c.300-cover restaurant, which is set to be the group’s largest so far, will open on 22 August in the city’s St Vincent Street and will be overseen by general manager Francis Carr. The currently operates two Pesto outlets in Manchester – at Deansgate and the Trafford Centre – plus one in Liverpool – at the Liverpool One development. It is thought to have pulled out of negotiations on a site in the proposed extension to the Birmingham Bullring. The company has reportedly placed under offer a 3,000sq ft unit at the 20,000 sq ft Spiceal Street extension. M&C Report understands that the group is still keen to open in Birmingham and has also taken a look at sites in London as part of future expansion plans. Gatt, who sold the La Tasca business to Penta Capital and a management team led by James Horler for £28.2m in 2001, told M&C Report last year, that his group planned to open one restaurant per year from cashflow, supported by debt funding from Royal Bank of Scotland, although it was considering seeking a private equity partner to pave the way for an accelerated rollout. The Pesto concept is built around tapas-style plates, but centred on Italian food.
