Stewart Miller, the managing director of David Lloyd Leisure, is rumoured to be the favourite to take over from David Thomas at Whitbread.

Dominic Walsh, writing in next month's Leisure Report, said that Miller, despite being the youngest of the four most likely internal candidates, has the most experience at Whitbread, and has avoided making any serious mistakes.

Walsh, referring to Miller's overseeing of the pubs and bars business, said: "Keeping a handle on a business with a For Sale sign hanging over it is notoriously difficult, with staff morale an especially tricky thing to maintain. Yet Miller did just that."
