McDonald's reported a 0.8% year-on-year fall in same-store sales for April, the company's 14th consecutive monthly fall.

Like-for-like sales in Europe, its second-largest market, fell 2.3% while like-for-like fell 6.9% in its Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa division.

Same-store sales in the United States rose 1.3%. Total sales rose 8% to $3.6bn (£2.2bn), with sales in Europe boosted by the weak dollar.

Jim Cantalupo, the company's chairman and chief executive, said: "Our revitalisation plan has been very focused on building sales at existing restaurants, so I am encouraged by our April sales, which reflected improvement compared with prior months' results."
