Individual Restaurant Company, the Manchester-based casual dining group, has opened a Piccolino Italian restaurant in Virginia Water, Surrey, near Wentworth Golf Club. The opening, which takes the Piccolino concept to nine sites, is the start of a busy opening period that will see the company open further restaurants in Newcastle and South London - in Wandsworth and Wimbledon. It will also launch a Restaurant Bar & Grill, of which it has four, in Liverpool early next year. It just opened a Bar & Grill in Leeds. Vernon Lord, managing director, said: “It's important because it shows we are successfully opening both brands.” Of the fact that Piccolino sits in an apparently crowded pizza and pasta market, Lord said that the concept was a little more refined than most offers. He said: 'Yes we do pizza and pasta and people can eat for £8.95 but we also have seabass, swordfish, steak and duck on the menu.” Average spend per head at Piccolino is between £20 and £25, while the number at Restaurant Bar & Grill is almost £30. The company, which is partly owned by Gresham Private Equity, typically spends £900,000 a site, which normally facilitates a restaurant with 130 covers.
