Leading restaurant and hotel guides are in danger of being driven out of business by a growing number of websites that are a "five-star scam" and often carry misleading reviews. Many restaurant owners, says The Sunday Times, take advantage of lax safeguards to drum up business by posting glowing reviews of their own establishments. One proprietor posted a message on a website raving about his "stunning pub restaurant" in West Yorkshire, while a London restaurateur claimed his business offered "amazing value". When an undercover reporter visited restaurants and hotels offering a service writing favourable online reviews, several were prepared to consider the proposition. The paper warns readers to beware of sites like toptable.co.uk and city-eating.com. The Sunday Times 12/11/06 pages 3 & 14
