McDonald's reported a 56% increase in first-quarter earnings to $511.5m (£285.4m) on the back of its new salad lines. The chain also has profited from a slump at rival Burger King and a rebound in the restaurant industry as a whole. Revenue for the quarter was $4.4bn, up 16% from $3.8bn a year earlier. Charlie Bell, the group’s new chief executive, paid tribute to Jim Cantalupo, who died recently, describing him as "an incredibly inspiring and passionate leader". Bell said he was committed to strengthening McDonald's and "continuing the momentum that began under Jim's leadership."
