Standards of hygiene at restaurants belonging to four of Britain’s leading fast-food chains have been slammed as “extremely poor” and “totally unacceptable”.

Twenty-seven councils have released 103 warning letters sent out by health officials during 2004 demanding recommended and legally-required changes.

McDonald’s received the most. But a beetle was found baked into a Domino’s pizza at Beeston, Nottingham, while Kentucky Fried Chicken at Ipswich was fined £13,000 for selling undercooked chicken. Burger King was also criticised.
