Andy Harrison, the chief executive of Whitbread, has moved to dampen speculation that the group is looking to sell its c390-strong restaurant division, which includes Beefeater and Brewer’s Fayre. In response to a research note by Geof Collyer at Deutsche Bank that said Whitbread could raise up to £600m from a sale of the division to possible suitors such as M&B and Spirit, Harrison told The Times that a sale would not be straightforward as most restaurant sites were adjacent top Premier Inns. He said: “It’s certainly not on the agenda”. Collyer had argued that if Whitbread was really serious in keeping its restaurants, it needed to provide additional data to enable proper comparisons, and management needed to assess whether there was a realistic chance of achieving margin parity with the peer group.
