Meatballs, the new concept from Hugh Fowler, the managing director of Covent Garden Restaurants (CGR), is looking to raise funds through crowd funding investing platform Crowdcube, as it plans to open more sites in London, M&C Report has learnt. Fowler, who founded Hamburger Union, is seeking funds to acquire, design and build the next two Meatballs restaurants. The group has already received expressions of interest from two major shopping centre companies to take units in their locations. It also negotiating on a site in the City and looking for sites in Covent Garden and Soho for the concept, which launched in the former Quality Chop House site in Farringdon last year. The sum required for the next stage of expansion is £300k-£500k. The group said that this together with cashflow and bank borrowing would fund the opening of the 2nd and 3rd units. The next phase of the concepts growth would then be a further major fund raising at a higher valuation to fund the rapid expansion of the concept. Fowler, who has set up the new venture with his wife Shelly, operates Meatballs independently from CGR, where he continues to be managing director.
