If McDonald’s have their way, fast-food will get even faster and chips will come with everything. The US burger chain is trialling Radio Frequency ID or RFID-chipped cards in drive-thrus, as a quick and easy method of payment. The technology means that customers will be able to wave their charge cards at a payment point in the drive-thru and have the cost of the meal deducted straight from their accounts. The system is being trialled at two McDonald’s venues in Dallas and New York. If it proves popular, the technology will be rolled out further. Similar RFID projects are already underway in US petrol stations, Exxon and Mobil.
