The first of top chef Michael Caine's new Adobe hotels has opened in Exeter in what was formerly the Royal Clarence. Caine and partner Andrew Brownsword hope the 53-room hotel will be the start of a major group of boutique establishments to rival the Hotel du Vin and Malmaison chains. There are already plans to open Adobes in Glasgow and Canterbury by next year, followed by more across the UK. Each hotel will have a champagne bar, tavern, café and restaurant, with the food and drink a main attraction. The signature dishes of Caine, who has two Michelin stars, will be made by local chefs from local produce. The Observer 16/10/05 (Escape) page 4
