Tragus, which owns Café Rouge and Strada restaurant chains, is expected to unveil a 60% leap in profits as customers trade down in the current tough economic climate. The group is believed to have made about £45m profit during the year to May, enjoying strong like-for-like sales of 3 to 4 %. Much of the success is down to the increased popularity of its 75 Bella Italia restaurants, which offer Mediterranean food prepared in a home-cooked style. Tragus has nearly £260m of debt on its book, but is not due for refinancing until 2014 and has enough leeway to pursue further acquisitions. It is on course to open 20 new restaurants this year.
