New McDonald’s chief executive Charlie Bell has pledged to continue with the new strategy laid down by his predecessor, Jim Cantalupo, who collapsed and died of a heart attack last week. A back-to-basics approach emphasising more efficient operations and quicker service enabled the burger giant under Cantalupo and Bell to revive sagging sales and reinvigorate a lacklustre brand. Andrew McKenna, who takes over Cantalupo’s other duties as chairman, will help Bell with the chain’s transition but, at 74, McKenna is unlikely to hold the post long term. McDonald’s will give a market update this week. The Business 25/06/04 page 17 The Independent on Sunday (Business) 25/06/04 page 14 (The Week Ahead)
