Belgian billionaire Albert Frere is buying Groupe Flo, France's largest family restaurant chain, for Eu137m. It has 160 eateries, mostly in France although the group is starting to expand in Spain, Russia and China. Brands include the Hippopotamus steakhouse, the Bistro Romain and Flo Brasseries. Frere took control of the loss-making French burger chain Quick in 2003 and turned it into a profitable rival to McDonald's. The Business 11/12/05 page 7
