India's rapidly-growing middle class is boosting sales of wine on the subcontinent with wine bars spreading through the country. Vijay Mallya, boss of the Kingfisher beer company, last week bought French sparkling wine producer Bouvet-Ladubay. Mallya, considered India's Richard Branson, will ship its wines to India where they will be bottled. He is also reported to be considering takeover bids for two South African wineries. Mumbai now drinks 100,000 cases of wine a year, with Bangalore consuming around half of that. Insiders say the market is growing fast. The Sunday Times 23/07/06 page 24
