Whiting & Hammond, the award-winning south-east multiple led by Brian Whiting, has secured its seventh site, Stanmer House in Brighton, a licensed wedding and conference venue set in 460 acres of park land. The historic house, which was built in 1772, comprises conference rooms, private dining areas, lounge bar, events rooms, professional kitchen and outside terraces. In 2004 Cherrywood Investments bought and rennovated the house after years of neglect. Whiting & Hammond are set to open their new venture there in December. An established conference and special events business, the acquisition of Stanmer House will be seen as slight departure for Whiting & Hammond, which currently operates six food-led pubs. Last year, the company was chosen to operate the training kitchens and restaurant at the new £20m West Kent College. It is also keen on developing an outside catering business. Earlier this year, co-founder Brian Whiting said the group was looking to eventually build an estate of 20 pubs.
