JD Wetherspoon revealed yesterday that it had increased the number of its pubs with televisions to show football and other sports "on a trial basis" from six four months ago to 20 today. The company's finance director, Jim Clarke, commenting on the slow-down in its pub openings programme, said: "I think we are just being a bit cautious. The pub sector is far from buoyant and opening 30 pubs is still more than the competition. We are in a period of opening just a few pubs and keeping one step ahead of the competition." The shares fell 5p to 273p yesterday.
