JD Wetherspoon has won the Camra award for best pub conversion in the United Kingdom, for The Gatekeeper, opposite the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

The site began life as a theatre in 1904, being converted into a wholesale chemist and then an auction house.

Marcus Crees, one of the interior designers who worked on the project, said: "A lot of our pub jobs have been in Grade 1 and Grade 2 listed buildings, and you have to have a sustainable design.

"With listed buildings you have to use the existing front and rear elevations, and often you can't alter features inside either, so you have to be creative, using the space you have to work with."

Crees is currently working on converting a floor of a multi-storey car park in Cardiff into a Lloyds No 1 for the company.
