JD Wetherspoon will update the City on Wednesday with a 13-week trading statement. The pubs chain warned in May that the smoking ban would leave profits marginally below expectations, but the recent wet weather is also thought to have had a negative effect. On a more positive side, the company will have benefited from increased pricing as well as refurbishment on its estate and 50 pub openings. Like-for-like sales growth during the 12 months to June is expected to be about 5%. The Mail on Sunday (Financial Mail) 15/07/07 page 8
