West Beer, the UK’s first German-style beer hall, has fallen foul of its local trading standards department by selling beer in litre glasses and steins. An inspector told the owners of the beer hall, on the banks of the Clyde, Glasgow, that under the 1985 Weights and Measures Act, it was a criminal offence to serve beer in this way. Now the Metric Martyrs Defence Fund has suggested that owners Gordon Stewart and Petra Wetzel, who are the only two Britons ever to attain Bavaria’s highest qualification as Braumeisters, should be allowed to offer the glasses if they make pint glasses available alongside. This was a compromise that was reached in another case in 2002 in an Austrian-theme pub in Worcester. The Sunday Telegraph 25/06/06 page 25
