Lancashire brewer and pub operator Thwaites has announced that following a review of the structure and operation of its board, Tony Spencer will no longer be a statutory director. The company, which is led by chief executive Richard Bailey, said that Spencer would continue to lead the development of its Shire Hotels and Thwaites Inns of Character operations as managing director of these businesses. Thwaites plans to run 25 Inns of Character by 2016. The aim of the concept is to revive the traditional aspects of ‘inn-keeping’ with strong emphasis on exceptional hospitality, good quality en suite bedrooms, locally sourced food on all menus and a wide range of cask ales and fine wines. They will be managed by Shire Hotels. It bought its sixth Inns of Character site – The Fleece Hotel in Cirencester, which was also the first acquisition outside its north west heartland, in April.
