Sun Capital Partners, which set up Atmosphere Bars and Clubs and is thought to be circling Luminar, has seen two of the companies it owns in the US – Real Mex Restaurants and Friendly's Ice Cream – file for bankruptcy protection in the space of just over 24 hours. The c.200-strong Real Mex Restaurants filed for Chapter 11 reorganization yesterday, saying that the move would speed the completion of a planned turnaround and possible sale. Sun Capital, which is Real Mex's majority owner, with an approximately 72% stake in the chain's holding company, acquired the business in 2006 for $359m. This was followed by Friendly’s closing 63 of its nearly 500 locations as it looks to reorganize under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The chain was bought for $337.2m by Sun Capital in 2007. According to reports in the US, Sun Capital is set to acquire Friendly's out of bankruptcy court. Sun Capital set up Atmosphere last year after is acquired the lion’s share of 3D Entertainment, around 30 sites, in a deal valued at about £10m. It represented the first step into the UK leisure market for the US private equity firm, which is rumoured to be one of the parties circling Luminar that last month revealed it had received indicative bids for the company.
