Pubs in Scotland suffered an 11% fall in drink sales and a 3% decline in food sales after smoking was banned in March, according to a survey by the Scottish Licensed Trade Association. To counter this, Punch is planning to improve food offerings at its Scottish pubs. The company says customers increasingly pop in for coffee and breakfast. Punch has also launched a £40m investment programme to prepare its English and Welsh pubs for next summer's ban. New outside furniture will include waterproof TV screens and heaters. Analysts fear the small local pubs in which Punch specialises will be harder hit than bigger town-centre pubs. The Sunday Telegraph 08/10/06 (Business) page 2
