Shepherd Neame, the Kent brewer and pub operator, is to convert one of its tenanted pubs into a hostel under an agreement with national hostel operator Journey’s. Journey’s has taken a tied lease on the First & Last in Dover, Kent, and will convert it to a 25-bed hostel. The bar will continue to be open to the public. Journey’s is to employ a manager to run the site, with an ambition that they will run the operation under franchise from the hostel company at some point. On the prospect of further hostel conversions, George Barnes, Shepherd Neame's tenanted trade director, said: “We’ve got to see how the relationship works and it’s possible there may be other houses where this is a good solution, but it’s too early to tell. I will be fascinated to see how it goes.”
