Scottish & Newcastle (S&N), the UK’s largest brewer, has contacted its wholesale customers to warn them it is raising its prices of beer by 3.5% and cider by 3.9% at the start of January. The brewer indicated that it would be looking at a similar price increase in supermarkets when it starts its annual negotiations with retailers in March next year. It is thought that the move by S&N is an attempt to pass on some of the high costs that has affected the brewing industry over the last 12 months, especially increased energy prices.
