Tourists can enjoy a drink or a meal in the countryside as long as they obey basic precautions against the spread of foot and mouth disease, says the government.

New guidance from the environment minister Michael Meacher says pubs, restaurants, cafés, hotels, guest houses and other accommodation in rural areas are still open for business, although the public "should not approach cattle, sheep, pigs or deer".
