Pub and bars are polishing their plasma screens in preparation for the vast throngs of England fans seeking out their venues to watch World Cup matches. The Financial Times says the tournament should prove a fillip at a time when they are suffering consumer belt-tightening. Pubs will go head to head with supermarkets and off-licences for World Cup customers against a backdrop of declining prices in the off-trade. Oriel Securities pointed out a bottle of Becks could now be bought for 40p a bottle in off-licences compared with £3 in a themed bar. Regent Inns is expected to benefit most from its extensive investment in TV coverage in its Walkabout outlets. Wetherspoon has installed plasma screens across its estate but Altium Securities said it did not think drinkers associated the company with watching live events. The newspaper quotes one analyst who says pizza companies will make a fortune. Financial Times 03/06/06 page 18
