The UK pub trade is starting to feel the pinch as British drinkers down less beer this autumn than for several years.

One pub chief executive told The Business he did not think Old Monk and SFI would be the only companies in trouble this winter.

However, the newspaper says even though landlords insist times are tough, it will not be much to do with a sudden slump in the nation’s thirst for drink if pubs have a difficult winter.

The Business points out that problems at SFI and Old Monk were more to do with over-ambitious management than a general downturn. Most indicators suggest UK consumers are still in the mood to spend.
