New consumer protection laws should not mean an end to popular drinks promotions in pubs. Fears were raised that promotions such as buy-one-get-one-free and those offering "buy two glasses of wine, get the rest of the bottle free" would fall foul of the new Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations. These restrict the use of the word "free" in promotions where money is paid. But trading standards officers are being advised that the kind of deals mentioned above do not contravene the regulations. The advice comes from local government co-ordinator Lacors, which was asked to clarify the legal position. It follows discussions with the Office of Fair Trading and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
