Tim Martin, chairman of JD Wetherspoon, has been granted an audience with MPs in the wake of his controversial call earlier this month for a compulsory smoking ban in all pubs. The Department for Culture, Media & Sport invited Wetherspoon's representatives to meeting on 5 May to discuss the issue, despite opposition from the majority of the industry, which is staunchly opposed to Martin's views. The industry has come together over the sensitive issue, creating the Charter Group, which hopes to avoid a blanket ban on smoking by working out a compromise with the government.
