Marstons has caved in to animal rights activists and forced one of its pubs to bar a farmer who breeds guinea pigs for medical research.
The Red Lion, in the village of Newborough,
Staffordshire, became a target of animal rights activists for refusing to bar a farmer who bred guinea pigs for medical research.
Thugs threatened to pour acid over customers’ cars and burn the pub to the ground, windows were smashed and abusive phone calls made to the staff.
But when the activists turned their attention to Marstons, which owns the pub, the brewery gave in and barred farmer Chris Hall.
Landlord Leith Marklew called the decision “absolutely disgusting” and quit in protest. Marston said it took the decision to ban the farmer for the safety of its employees and business partners.
