JD Wetherspoon, the managed pub operator, has cut the cost of an early morning coffee in its pubs to 49p - in bid to improve its burgeoning breakfast trade. The pub group – which earlier this year started opening at 7am – said the 49p cup would be available in Wetherspoon pubs across the UK until 9am, seven days a week. Tea will also be sold at the same price. John Hutson, Wetherspoon’s chief executive, said: “We believe that this is the best value cup of coffee and tea available on the high street. “A similar sized cup of coffee in either Starbucks or Costa Coffee costs substantially more, with some of their coffees costing more than four times the price of one of ours.” Wetherspoon pubs serve a range of Lavazza (Rainforest Alliance Certified) coffees; latte, cappuccino, espresso, mocha and Americano.
