A pub in the Cotswolds is playing host to up to 200 Japanese tourists a week after its trout dinners inspired a work of art.

The Catherine Wheel at Bibury in Gloucestershire is due to be visited by a Japanese television crew making a documentary on the Eldridge Pope pub as its fame grows.

The Catherine Wheel’s popularity is believed to have come about quite by accident after a Japanese tourist visited the area and came across the famous trout farm in Bibury. He later dined on the trout at the Catherine Wheel and was so impressed he painted a picture of the pub which he took back home to Japan.

Katie Newman, the pub’s assistant manager, said: "As far as we understand the gentleman became a famous artist and that first painting of the pub has inspired thousands of Japanese to visit us and, of course, enjoy the delights of our local trout."
