Greene King is a step closer to acquiring a majority stake in Capital Pub Company after taking its stake in the London-based pub operator to 46.1% after buying shares worth £6.85m. It follows news this morning that Greene King’s £70m bid for the company has the support of Capital’s board. In a statement released this afternoon, the Suffolk company said: “Greene King announces that it has today acquired, subject to settlement, a total of 2,914,819 Capital Pubs Shares, representing approximately 10.8% of the issued share capital of Capital Pubs. The Capital Pubs Shares were acquired at a price of 235p per share." The company said it has also an irrevocable undertaking from Unicorn Asset Management, a Capital shareholder, in respect of its 440,000 ordinary shares, which represent 1.6% of the total shares issued. These two batches of shares, together with the irrevocable undertakings from Capital directors and shareholders announced earlier today, represent 46.1% of the current issued share capital of the company.
